Xperi used the IFA trade show on September 3 to unveil major TiVo OS updates, including a forthcoming Agent TiVo feature for natural-language discovery. The company also said it reduced the operating system’s required footprint to 1GB of RAM and 4GB of storage, potentially lowering television manufacturers’ component costs. Xperi Inc. (NYSE:XPER) wants to be the independent software layer; Roku, Inc. (NASDAQ:ROKU) already owns a large connected-TV platform and sells branded televisions.
Xperi’s bull case is neutrality. Manufacturers that do not want to surrender the home screen to an advertising platform can license TiVo OS, while Agent TiVo can make fragmented streaming catalogs easier to search. Lower hardware requirements strengthen the pitch in cost-sensitive markets. Insider Monkey counted 23 hedge funds holding XPER at June 30, up from 15 at March 31. Clearline Capital reported 2,475,135 shares at June 30 after reducing its position during the quarter.
The bear case is distribution. A feature announced as forthcoming has no demonstrated adoption, retention, or revenue. Xperi depends on manufacturers choosing its software and consumers encountering it at scale. Generative search can also be copied, and licensing economics may remain modest if television partners keep bargaining power.

Roku’s advantage is its installed audience and advertising data. It can place discovery inside a platform consumers already use and connect recommendations to subscriptions and ad inventory. Seventy-nine hedge funds held Roku, Inc. (NASDAQ:ROKU) in Q2, up from 68 in Q1. ARK Investment Management reported 595,880 shares after reducing its disclosed stake by roughly 84% during the quarter.
Roku’s risk is that owning the interface requires funding hardware, content, and sales while competing with Amazon, Google, Samsung, and now more capable independent systems. AI recommendations also need to improve viewing and monetization without undermining trust.
The August 14 settlement showed 4.02 million XPER shares sold short, about 8.52% of float, with 6.76 days to cover. The position rose 20.2% from July 31 and predates the IFA announcement, giving positive execution some squeeze potential. TiVo OS has a plausible low-cost route into more screens, but Roku retains the distribution moat. Manufacturer wins, active households, engagement, and monetization will decide whether Xperi’s AI feature changes market share or merely modernizes the product.
The clearest early proof would be named television partners shipping Agent TiVo, followed by active-user and advertising data. Until then, the lower hardware requirement is more measurable than the consumer-AI advantage.
