Google’s John Mueller said on Bluesky that there is nothing special for one to do for generative AI responses within Google Search. He wrote, “from our POV there’s nothing really special you need to do for generative AI responses in search.”
Truth is, he didn’t fully understand the question, he admitted, but the statement jives with previous Google communication on the topic.
Google has repeatedly said that SEO is the same as AEO, GEO, or whatever you want to call it. Here is some of our coverage of that:
- Google Search On How To Optimize For Generative AI With Myth-Busting
- Google’s Danny Sullivan & John Mueller On SEO For AI: It’s The Same

- Google Talks On Hiring A GEO/AEO/SEO & Buying AI-Optimization Tools

Microsoft Bing actually disagrees with Google on the topic. I find the overall debate kind of funny but whatever.
