Anthropic announced on October 8, 2026 that it is committing $150 million over three years to the Genesis Mission, a federal initiative to accelerate scientific and technological discovery through AI. Anthropic said the funding will go toward making Claude available to more than 15 agencies participating in the mission, including NASA, the National Institutes of Health, and the National Science Foundation.

The company made the announcement as part of the Science: A New Golden Age Summit, hosted by the White House Office of Science and Technology Policy in Washington, DC. Anthropic said it shares the administration’s view, laid out in the document “Science: A New Golden Age,” that AI can have a profound and positive impact on scientific discovery, and that it was glad to back the administration’s efforts to support American scientists.

    What the Three-Year Commitment Funds

Anthropic said that over the next three years it will provide Claude, Claude Code, and API credits to several hundred Genesis Mission research projects. The company also said it will partner closely with agencies and national laboratories on the administration’s top science priorities, which the announcement identifies as including fusion energy and quantum computing. A third funded area covers training, onboarding, and technical support for scientists working on Genesis Mission projects, along with assistance for agencies new to the mission in getting their first projects running.

The company described the commitment as a way to help researchers at federal agencies and national laboratories use Claude to meaningfully advance their work on what it called some of the world’s most difficult scientific problems.

    Anthropic’s Broader Science Programs

Anthropic presented the Genesis Mission funding as part of a broader effort to support scientific research. Earlier in 2026, the company launched Claude Science, an AI workbench that integrates the tools and packages researchers most commonly use, and opened 10,000 free and discounted Claude seats for academic scientists. It also expanded its AI for Science program, which gives credits to researchers on high-impact projects, and began a research preview of the Model Hardware Standard, a shared specification for AI agents to safely operate laboratory instruments.

    The Genesis Mission

The Department of Energy describes the Genesis Mission as a national initiative that unites its national laboratories, industry, and academia to harness AI for breakthroughs in energy dominance, discovery science, and national security. According to the department’s official mission page, the effort is building the American Science and Security Platform, an integrated platform connecting supercomputers, experimental facilities, AI systems, and unique datasets. The mission also includes national science and technology challenges that the department says require accelerated U.S. innovation and discovery, with organized efforts around those challenges intended to deliver benefits through the mission’s AI platforms and partnerships. Under Secretary for Science Darío Gil serves as the department’s director for the Genesis Mission. On July 22, 2026, the department announced more than $800 million in partner commitments to the mission.

Prior Work With the Energy Department

The new commitment extends a multi-year partnership that Anthropic and the Department of Energy first announced on December 18, 2025. That partnership focused on three domains: American energy dominance, the biological and life sciences, and scientific productivity. The December announcement said the collaboration had the potential to affect work at all 17 of the country’s national laboratories.

Under the partnership, Anthropic said it sought to give department researchers access to Claude and to a team of Anthropic engineers who could develop purpose-built tools. The announcement listed AI agents (models that take actions) for the department’s highest-priority challenges, Model Context Protocol servers connecting Claude to scientific instruments and tools, and Claude Skills for specialized expertise on relevant scientific workflows. Anthropic also said Claude could speed permitting review processes that bottleneck energy expansion, support the development of early-warning systems for future pandemics and biological threat detection, hasten drug discovery and development, and draw on fifty years of department research to accelerate the research cycle in strategically important domains.

“Anthropic was founded by scientists who believe AI can deliver transformative progress for research itself,” Jared Kaplan, Anthropic’s chief science officer, said in the December 2025 announcement.

Before the Genesis Mission partnership, Anthropic’s projects with the department included co-developing a nuclear risk classifier with the National Nuclear Security Administration and rolling out Claude at Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory. Anthropic’s new announcement says that, since December 2025, it has worked with the department to bring Claude to scientists across the national laboratories.
