Roland Corporation released Melody Flip on September 4, 2026, an AI-assisted melody-generation tool the company describes as a “music creation partner” for producers working in digital audio workstations. The software was created through a collaboration between Roland and Sony Computer Science Laboratories, the companies’ research partnership spanning music analysis technology.
Rather than automatically generating complete songs, Melody Flip serves as a starting point for creators, according to Roland’s release announcement. The tool helps users discover musical ideas, select them in line with their own artistic sensibilities, and develop them into original works. Roland said the software addresses one of the most challenging aspects of music production: finding the initial spark of inspiration.
How the Palettes System Works
Melody Flip organizes its generated material around what Roland calls Palettes. Each Palette is a library of musical ideas comprising four connected parts: melody, chords, bass, and drums. The release version of the software includes approximately 250 Palettes spanning a range of genres and musical styles, according to Roland’s official product page.
Users can begin in two ways. They can import an audio file, such as a track, loop, beat, or song idea, which Melody Flip analyzes for structure, tempo, beat positions, key, chord progression, genre, and mood. Based on that analysis, the software recommends Palettes that match the musical character of the imported audio. Alternatively, users can browse the Palette library directly and choose a style close to the idea they want to explore.
From there, Melody Flip generates melodic ideas and related musical phrases. Roland states the tool does not copy the melody of an imported song, but uses analysis methodologies and reference points to suggest new directions. Users can audition results, try variations, and adjust the output before exporting.
The song-analysis feature utilizes research findings and technologies from Sony CSL’s Music Information Retrieval field, according to the release announcement.
Export and Platform Details
Melody Flip exports generated melodies along with backing parts for chords, bass, and drums as audio files or MIDI files. Those files can be imported directly into major digital audio workstations for further editing, arrangement, and production. Roland describes the workflow as supporting the process from initial sketches and demos through to fully developed productions.
The plug-in is compatible with macOS and Windows. The product page specifies VST3 and AU format support for macOS versions 14, 15, and 26, and for Windows 11. Melody Flip is delivered through Roland Cloud Manager version 3.1.23 or later and is included with all Roland Cloud membership levels, including the free tier.
From March Announcement to September Release
Roland first announced Melody Flip on March 17, 2026, describing it then as an innovative melody-generation software product merging Sony CSL’s music creation research with Roland’s expertise in creative tools. At that time, the company said a free trial would launch in May 2026 and that the software would be delivered
The March announcement also framed the product within Roland’s stated position on AI in music production. The company said such tools should not replace the artist but instead amplify them, supporting a workflow where human intent, taste, and creativity remain at the core, with technology acting as a partner or co-creator rather than the main creator. Roland said it collaborated with artists throughout the development process, using their input to guide the software’s creative features and workflows.
Roland CEO and Representative Director Masahiro Minowa said at the March announcement that Melody Flip represented a significant step forward in responsibly developed AI, introducing a future in which technology and people work together to elevate creativity.
Roland is a founding supporter of and adheres to The Principles for Music Creation with AI, an industry framework that frames AI as a technology that should support and amplify human creativity while respecting the role of artists, songwriters, and creators.
Artist Response and Company Positioning
Roland included an artist review from Ginnojo Hoshi in its release announcement. Hoshi described Melody Flip as a compelling plug-in for gaining inspiration and new ideas, and said it fit his workflow of reconstructing fragments of phrases and expanding ideas by listening to varied sounds. He said that while many AI-generated tools present finished outputs, Melody Flip leaves the final expression to the user and takes a supportive stance toward the creative process.
The release announcement positions the tool against the blank-page problem in music production, where figuring out where to begin can be a bigger challenge than mastering techniques or learning equipment. Roland said Melody Flip encourages experimentation beyond familiar creative habits and can serve as a catalyst for discovering new artistic directions, while keeping final creative decisions in the user’s hands.
