New report reveals industry contributed $4.4 billion to Montana’s economy

    • August 04 2026

HELENA, Mont. – Governor Greg Gianforte today recognized a new report from the Montana High Tech Business Alliance and the University of Montana Bureau of Business and Economic Research that reveals Montana’s high-tech industry generated $7.9 billion in revenue in 2024, contributing $4.4 billion to the state’s economy.

“As Montana leads the nation with one of the fastest-growing economies, this new data reveals the high-tech industry is having an emerging role in our success with significant contributions to our economy and the creation of high-paying jobs,” Gov. Gianforte said. “Entrepreneurs, innovators, and job creators are choosing to invest in Montana to enjoy our unmatched quality of life and skilled workforce and joining a growing hub of opportunity.”

The 2026 Montana High Tech Industries Report profiles key characteristics and trends for the high-tech industry in Montana showing that the industry grew twice as fast as the overall Montana economy from 2014 to 2024, increasing its share of state GDP from 3.6 percent to 5 percent.

The research also found Montana’s technology wages have become nationally competitive. In 2025, average wages in the state’s tech sector reached $146,000. Under Gov. Gianforte’s leadership, Montana ranks third in the nation for fastest wage growth and is only one of two states in the nation where wage growth has outpaced inflation since 2020. The average wage earned by Montana workers reached $60,037 in 2024.

The growth of Montana’s high-tech sector complements the growth of Montana’s overall economy. In June, the governor announced Montana ranks in the top five states with the fastest-growing economies since 2021. In 2024, Montana was ranked as the best state for business startups.

Since taking office, Gov. Gianforte has prioritized creating the best environment for business and more opportunities for Montanans by delivering the largest tax cuts in state history, providing tax cuts for Montanans at every income level, securing immediate and long-term property tax relief, and increasing the supply of affordable workforce housing.
