The Institute for Information Industry said at a trade show on Tuesday that it is using generative AI to help with dementia rehabilitation
Dementia rehabilitation revolves around a patient’s life journey and cannot be replicated. This makes content creation difficult and time-consuming for the nursing staff.
The institute combined generative AI, semantics, and lip-syncing to create unique sounds and visuals to help seniors remember important people, places, and events. It said the program can be trained with photos or stories to replicate interactive experiences, a press release said.
The Institute’s AI Innovation Director-General Derrick Tai (戴偉峻) said the AI uses static materials to help patients undergoing nostalgia therapy. He added that the project marks AI’s transition to practical settings in an aging society with nursing staff shortages.
The program has been tested at Hualien’s Mennonite Christian Hospital and St. Mary’s Hospital. The institute has collected user and staff feedback to add more scenes and characters for better immersion.
