Board members emphasized that generative tools remain off-limits on district devices under a new screen time policy.

Los Angeles Unified School District officials clarified a districtwide prohibition on student artificial intelligence tools during the Generative AI Ad Hoc Committee meeting on Wednesday.

School board members and community attendees gathered for the panel’s inaugural session to discuss artificial intelligence in local classrooms. District representatives confirmed that a strict moratorium on generative AI usage remains active for all students using district-issued computers and devices.

School leaders originally allowed students aged 13

School leaders originally allowed students aged 13 and older to access generative software after completing an instructional guidance course before the 2026-27 academic year. District authorities subsequently shut down student access to the software following the rollout of a comprehensive new screen time policy at the start of the current school year.

Meeting attendees expressed relief after learning the restriction was already enforced across all school campuses and digital assets, and the wish that decisions on policies about Generative AI in LAUSD schools be driven by educators and psychologists, not AI companies, as reported by NBC 4 News.

This policy was publicly announced the day after Mayor Zohran Mamdani announced a similar ban on AI in New York City schools.

Board members clarified during the proceedings

Board members clarified during the proceedings that the LAUSD AI moratorium applies strictly to district hardware and networks, noting officials lack the authority to restrict what students access on personal, non-district devices outside the classroom.

LAUSD issued a statement that said, “The inaugural meeting of the Generative AI Ad Hoc Committee was held today, continuing the District’s work to develop recommendations for guardrails and procedures for the use of generative AI by students. The committee will bring its policy recommendations to the Board for consideration at the end of the school year.”

“Previously, LAUSD students aged 13 and older who completed required Digital Citizenship instruction and acknowledged the Responsible Use Policy could access approved generative AI tools. Since the beginning of the 2026-2027 school year, the District practice has been to restrict student access to generative AI platforms while the District reviews instructional use and safeguards.”
