Jaia Robotics is Harnessing Micro-Autonomous Systems for Coastal Science

Coastal scientists face persistent challenges when trying to observe fast-changing, spatially complex environments. Vessel-based surveys remain expensive, moored platforms provide limited coverage, and manual biological sampling often strains personnel capacity. Jaia Robotics, a Bristol, RI based developer of micro-sized autonomous aquatic drones, has emerged as a compelling solution to bridge these gaps by delivering low-cost, scalable systems that can rapidly collect high-resolution oceanographic and environmental data across nearshore and inland waters.

Through its expanding family of JaiaBot platforms, Jaia Robotics is advancing autonomous sensing for harmful algal bloom (HAB) detection, multi-parameter water quality monitoring, and coastal resilience assessments. Each JaiaBot variant shares a common architecture; propulsion system, electronics stack, software, and cloud data pipeline allowing scientists to easily transition among mission types without retraining or specialized infrastructure. More than 300 units have already been delivered to government, academic, and industry users, demonstrating both reliability and manufacturability.

Harmful Algal Blooms: Synoptic and Responsive Monitoring

HAB events demand spatially distributed measurements that traditional platforms struggle to achieve. JaiaBot-BIO integrates fluorometers, turbidity sensors, dissolved oxygen, pH, CTD, and imagery into a single, micro-UUV package capable of real-time bloom detection. The C-FLUOR optical heads allow rapid reconfiguration to target chlorophyll, phycoerythrin, phycocyanin, or oil-related fluorescence. Deploying a JaiaBot pod with multiple vehicles working together enables scientists to rapidly track bloom intensity and perimeters within aquaculture zones, estuaries, or HAB-prone coastal environments.

Complementing the BIO system, the JaiaBot-HYDRO-CTD provides dense hydrographic coverage to characterize stratification, frontal dynamics, and other physical drivers of bloom formation. When deployed in multi-vehicle pods, the fleet can complete synoptic CTD casts without interrupting vessel operations.

    Water Quality: Multi-Parameter, Real-Time Assessment

Water quality programs increasingly need fine-scale sampling capabilities. The JaiaBot platform supports distributed measurements of temperature, salinity, dissolved oxygen, pH, turbidity, fluorometry, and imagery, all parameters essential for regulatory compliance, industrial monitoring, and watershed management. Their shallow-water operability and “launch from anywhere” design permit access to confined, hazardous, or remote areas where traditional vessels cannot easily navigate.

Coastal Resilience: Mapping Change in Dynamic Environments

High-resolution bathymetry, wave height, current vectors, and stratification are crucial for understanding coastal erosion, inlet dynamics, and storm impacts. JaiaBot-HYDRO conducts vertical profiles to depths of 100 meters that provide bathymetry and can bottom classification. Extended-range variants offer long-duration loitering and wide-area surveying to support storm recovery assessments, rapid environmental evaluation, and coastal engineering projects.

Jaia Robotics is also advancing airborne deployment through its NOAA SBIR JaiaBot-STORM, enabling rapid pre-storm sampling of atmospheric and upper-ocean data to improve hurricane forecasting models.
