    Overview:

    • The Witcher 4: You can play it without completing the previous games.

    • The Witcher 3: It offers the most important background on Ciri, Geralt, and their relationship.

    • The First Two Games: They add lore and history but are not essential preparation for The Witcher 4.

Gamers do not necessarily need to play the previous Witcher games before jumping into The Witcher 4. CD PROJEKT RED is positioning the title as the beginning of a new Witcher saga, with Ciri taking the lead role. While earlier games can give players additional context about the world and its characters, they are not required to understand the new story. However, The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt can provide useful background, particularly on Ciri and Geralt and their connection to the series.

The Witcher 4 Starts a New Chapter

    The Witcher 4
follows Ciri as a monster hunter. CD PROJEKT RED calls it a single-player, open-world game and the first title in a new saga. The reveal trailer showed Ciri take a witcher contract in a remote village where a monster demands ritual human sacrifice. The game uses Unreal Engine 5, and a later technology demo showed Ciri in Kovir, a region new to the main games.

This setup gives new players a clear entry point. The story does not depend on knowledge of every event from Geralt’s earlier adventures. Ciri
has a deep history in the world, yet the new game can explain that history through its own story.

The Witcher 3 Gives the Most Useful Context

The strongest first step is The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt
. The game follows Geralt as he searches for Ciri, his adopted daughter, while the Wild Hunt pursues her. That relationship matters when Ciri takes the lead in The Witcher 4.

The Witcher 3 also gives context for Yennefer, Triss, Dandelion, the Northern Kingdoms, and Ciri’s political conflicts. Those details add weight to familiar faces in the new saga.

The First Two Games Are Optional

The Witcher and The Witcher 2: Assassins of Kings explain older parts of Geralt’s journey. Both titles add history, characters, conflicts, and choices that shape the original saga. CD PROJEKT RED’s Witcher Classics page presents The Witcher 3 as the major conclusion of Geralt’s original story, with his most important contract focused on Ciri.

    Neither game
needs a place on the must-play list for The Witcher 4. The Witcher 2 offers a bridge into the later story, yet The Witcher 3 carries the most useful Ciri context.

Geralt Still Matters in The Witcher 4

Ciri may hold the lead role, but Geralt has not vanished from the story. Recent comments from The Witcher 4 narrative team confirm that Geralt still has an important role in the new game. That detail makes The Witcher 3 more valuable for anyone who wants the full emotional weight of the shift from Geralt to Ciri.

Geralt’s main saga centered on his contracts, relationships, choices, and search for Ciri. The Witcher 4 places Ciri at the center and explores her own path as a witcher.

The Witcher 3 Gets a Major New Reason to Return

The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt Remastered arrives September 29, 2026, with visual, performance, and gameplay upgrades. Owners on eligible platforms can claim a free upgrade. Hearts of Stone and Blood and Wine also come with the remastered base game.

Another major addition arrives in 2027. The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt Songs of the Past brings Geralt back for a new adventure in Letten, a new region with quests, characters, and secrets. CD PROJEKT RED plans the expansion for PC, PlayStation 5
, Xbox Series X|S, and Nintendo Switch 2
    .

    The Witcher 4 Has a 2028 Target

CD PROJEKT RED has set a 2028 target for The Witcher 4, although the studio has not shared an exact release date. The Witcher 4 will not appear at Gamescom 2026; Songs of the Past takes the spotlight there.

The full trilogy offers the complete history, but The Witcher 3 covers the most important ground for Ciri’s next chapter.

    Why This Matters

Knowing the need for previous Witcher games helps new players choose the right starting point without extra effort. The decision also shapes story context, character ties, and emotional impact. The Witcher 4 starts a fresh saga with Ciri, yet earlier titles, especially The Witcher 3, add valuable depth to her story.

The Best Way to Enter The Witcher 4

The complete order starts with The Witcher, then The Witcher 2, followed by The Witcher 3 and its expansions. For a shorter route, The Witcher 3 is the clear choice. A direct jump into The Witcher 4 remains possible.

Previous Witcher games add depth, but they do not create a barrier. The Witcher 3 offers the best bridge, while the first two games remain optional. The remaster arrives on September 29, Songs of the Past follows in 2027, and The Witcher 4 targets 2028. The path from Geralt’s era to Ciri’s saga now looks clear.

    1. Do I need to play The Witcher 3 before The Witcher 4?

No, but The Witcher 3 is the best previous game to play for additional story context.

    2. Can I start The Witcher 4 as my first Witcher game?

Yes. It begins a new saga centered on Ciri and is designed to provide a new entry point.

    3. Should I play The Witcher 1 and 2 first?

They are optional. They expand Geralt’s history but are not required to understand The Witcher 4.

    4. Is Geralt in The Witcher 4?

Yes. Geralt still has an important role, although Ciri is the main protagonist.

    5. When is The Witcher 4 expected to release?

CD PROJEKT RED is targeting 2028, but an exact release date has not been announced.
