Design platform Canva has released its first image generation model, Canva Craft, built by its in-house research team. The model is available to all Canva users in the Dream Lab tab.
Craft works in two stages. It first interprets a user’s prompt and plans the composition, covering spatial relationships, relative scale, visual hierarchy and information for generating text. It then renders an image of up to 2K resolution in up to 30 aspect ratios for different platforms. Canva says the approach delivers accurate object details, legible text and precise edits that don’t alter the rest of the image.
Canva trained the model on designs, not photographs, using human-designed templates from its library, including posters, social posts, presentations, infographics, menus and typography-rich layouts. As a result, images created with Craft can be converted into layered, editable designs using Canva Magic, Canva’s image-to-design transformer.
Craft will also be available through the Canva
Craft will also be available through the Canva API. Canva plans to support image generation in third-party chatbots such as ChatGPT and Gemini through its MCP. The company is developing two cost-efficient versions, Craftfast and Craft-ultrafast, to be released soon.
Researchers from Leonardo.ai, which Canva acquired in 2024, contributed to the model. Canva says Craft debuted fourth on the DesignArena image generation leaderboard.
The launch gives Canva more control over quality, speed and costs, which it has been working to manage after cutting its 2026 revenue growth forecast to 20 per cent from 30 per cent, citing the high cost of delivering AI features.
