Are we willing to let Big Tech self-police itself on AI?
- SNPS
The Market Hang panel debates whether to let technology companies police themselves on AI or whether government regulation is still needed without pausing development, and what Synopsys CEO Sassine Ghazzal had to say on the matter.
Today’s panel includes host Turney Duff, Futurum CEO Daniel Newman, Yahoo Finance’s Julie Hyman, and Gerber Kawasaki Wealth and Investment Management CEO Ross Gerber.
I mean, you were just talking about Synopsis and the new product they came out with. And I talked to Sissine Gazi, the CEO today about this and I asked him his view, like self police, liability, what’s your approach? And this is what he told me.
It’s always the company’s responsibility to when you
It’s always the company’s responsibility to when you develop a product, that you validate the product. We’re in the software business. When we design a product, we make sure that we validate and invest significant amount in not only the development, the development and the validation of the product. Now, with AI is happening at a pace that engineers never seen before. It the race to get to the best and next model is natural, but at the same time, the investment needs to happen on validating that model.
So, so it’s feels it felt to me like Sasine was in the Jensen camp, right? The camp that like Jensen kind of said very simply, well, a company’s not going to ship a product if it’s not, which I think is a little disingenuous in this world to be frank, because A, there we’ve already have models that have gotten out of control of their creators. And then B, what Ross is talking about is that there are models out in the world that are being used for nefarious purposes.
We’ve put we put planes in the sky with software that didn’t work. We’ve put drugs into the market that have killed people for a long time before being taken off and deregulated. So I I’m actually agreeing with you. Like actually expecting the full self-regulation is wrong, but to say let’s just pause and stop innovation, complete nonsense. What we need to do is we need to create an agency. We need to regulate, we need to regulate alongside. We need to build this plane as fast as we can. We need to win and the China US thing is real. I know we some people hate to talk about it, but like look, West, the West needs to win this. It it does. It’s decades of economic leadership that are depending on it. But I’m having said that, like we need to build, like SEC to regulate? Yes, you need an SEC, you need an FDA. Again, are they perfect? No, it’s imperfect. But it would but the idea that we’re stopping was such nonsense. And and that’s the kind of stuff when I talk about the public calamity of of unpopularity around AI is because these are the kinds of discussions we have. We don’t have a real discussion about how it needs to be done. We say, oh, let’s just pause or let’s stop or let’s lose or like, no, like we we need to build this out and we need to put smart people alongside of it. But realistically, and I heard Ross say it’s not the government.
