A Beaver County has announced it recently was the victim of a ransomware attack on its computer system.

Administrator Lisa McCoy released a statement on Sept. 4 alerting the public that Beaver County Behavioral Health discovered the ransomware on July 8 and the agency has been working with federal law enforcement as well as third-party cybersecurity and data forensics consultants to resolve the situation.

According to the statement, the investigation has determined cyber criminals copied data from the BCBH network, including protected health information. The investigation is ongoing, and BCBH will be conducting a thorough review of the impacted data to establish what information may have been involved, who could be affected and where those people reside so that it can provide written notice.

Based upon BCBH’s preliminary review, McCoy said,

Based upon BCBH’s preliminary review, McCoy said, it has determined the protected health information was related to individuals who have received or are currently receiving services from BCBH.

To date, BCBH has determined that the following types of information were affected: name, date of birth, Social Security number, driver’s license number, dates of services, individual case identifying number, medical or health information, diagnosis/treatment information, healthcare provider name, medications, insurance identification number or insurance claims information and/or information related to services provided by BCBH.

Upon completing our review, McCoy said the agency will provide the required written notice to individuals. BCBH is providing notice on its website for individuals whose information may have been impacted in the recent cyber incident at https://www.beavercountypa.gov/ and https://www.beavercountypa.gov/departments/behavioral-health.

BCBH continues to closely monitor its systems, data

BCBH continues to closely monitor its systems, data and network access, as well as evaluate and make changes to strengthen its network against any future incidents, the statement read.

As a precautionary measure, BCBH encourages potentially impacted individuals to take appropriate steps to protect their health information by regularly reviewing account statements, utilizing free credit reports and any health insurance Explanation of Benefits (EOB) forms to identify unauthorized or suspicious activity, and reporting any unusual activity to law enforcement.
