Overview:
-
Tata Punch EV offers a more affordable entry point, with its 40 kWh battery delivering a competitive claimed driving range.
-
Nexon EV provides more power, additional cabin space and a slightly longer claimed range for frequent highway travellers.
-
The bigger battery may not justify the higher price for commuters whose daily driving remains largely within city limits.
Buying an electric car is not just about how far it can travel on a single charge. The price, charging time, everyday comfort and the kind of roads you drive on also matter. This is where Tata Motors’ Punch EV and Nexon EV make for an interesting comparison.
Both electric SUVs target buyers looking to move away from petrol and diesel vehicles, but they serve slightly different needs. The Punch EV is smaller, more affordable and easier to handle in city traffic. The Nexon EV, on the other hand, offers a larger battery, more power and additional cabin space.
The question is whether the Nexon EV’s bigger battery justifies spending more, particularly if most of your driving is limited to daily office commutes and city errands.
Tata Punch EV vs Neon EV: Price, Battery and Range
The Punch EV is available with 30 kWh and 40 kWh battery options, while the Nexon EV comes with 30 kWh and 45 kWh options. For buyers comparing the larger battery versions, the difference in capacity is 5 kWh.

Battery and Range: Does Five Extra kWh Make a Difference?
On paper, the difference between the two larger battery versions does not look particularly significant. The Punch EV offers a claimed range of 468 km, while the Nexon EV goes up to 489 km. That is a difference of just 21 km.
The real-world C75 figures also put the two fairly close, with the Punch EV offering 335-355 km and the Nexon EV delivering 350-375 km.
For someone travelling 30-50 km daily, either vehicle should comfortably handle routine commuting, provided charging is planned properly. The Nexon EV’s larger battery becomes more useful for people who regularly undertake longer journeys.
Performance and Driving Experience
Nexon EV gets an edge over its rival in terms of horsepower and torque. While the former has its 45 kWh variant generating 145 hp and 215 Nm of torque, the latter generates only 129 hp and 154 Nm. This extra horsepower might prove to be useful in overtaking on highways, climbing up hills, and carrying loads of passengers.
It is the small size of the Punch EV that is the USP of the vehicle. The small size makes navigating through busy traffic, narrow roads, and finding parking space easy for the Punch EV owner.
Charging and Everyday Convenience
Both the cars have support for home charging and fast DC charging. The battery of 45 kWh on the Nexon EV model can be charged in about 40 minutes from 10% to 80% using a 60 kW DC charger.
The battery of 40 kWh on the Punch EV model charges at a rate of 65 kW DC fast charging with Tata stating that it is possible to get a 20% to 80% charge in 26 minutes. It would help the customers requiring home charging to cover most of their needs.
Space and Features: Which One is More Practical?
The Nexon EV is larger and has a bigger wheelbase, thus giving it an upper hand when it comes to the overall space inside the vehicle. This means it would be better suited for a family looking for a vehicle to travel together in.
It is interesting that the Punch EV provides some additional boot space – 366 liters compared to the Nexon EV’s 350 liters. However, both vehicles have their own modern amenities; however, the equipment is different depending on the variant.
Which One Should You Buy?
The choice will largely depend on the purpose of having your electric SUV. In cases where your daily driving activities include office work, schooling, shopping, and weekend trips, then going for the 40 kWh capacity of the Punch EV will make perfect sense as it is almost the same range as the Nexon EV, but cheaper.
If however, your driving needs involve intercity travel, larger cabin space, or higher power output, then the choice of the Nexon EV would make more sense. The battery size difference provides extra range, but the higher price might be unnecessary for the average city commuter.
Finally, the extra battery capacity is justified only if you require it, otherwise, the Punch EV might be the better buy for most cases of commuting in the city.
