Airbnb Plans AI Travel Agent for Planning, Booking and Support

Airbnb plans to begin rolling out an AI agent for trip planning and booking to guests in the first half of 2027, the company said in its third-quarter 2026 shareholder letter released November 5, 2026.

The product remains in development. Airbnb’s longer-term goal is for the specialized agent to plan an entire trip across homes, hotels, services, experiences and additional categories, with discovery, booking and post-booking assistance handled within Airbnb.

An Interface Built Around Each Question

Rather than relying only on a conventional text chat window, the planned experience builds an interface around a guest’s question. The agent draws from a library of hundreds of travel-specific interface elements, including maps, photos, comparisons, calendars and itineraries, and composes them in real time according to what the guest wants.

That design is intended to let guests explore options, make decisions with travel companions and take action directly in Airbnb. It reflects the company’s position that discovering where to go and where to stay is part of the travel experience, unlike routine tasks such as making a restaurant reservation or scheduling an appointment.

    Marketplace Behavior and Reservation Control

Airbnb reports that more than 75% of guests use its maps when deciding where to stay, over 90% browse multiple listing photos and 70% read reviews before booking. The average booking has three guests, making the choice of a place to stay a shared decision for many trips and helping explain why the proposed agent emphasizes browsing and comparisons instead of only answering questions.

Airbnb cites nearly 20 years of bringing millions of hosts and guests together as the foundation for a personalized travel search and booking experience that outside agents cannot replicate. More than 90% of stays involve direct guest-host communication, with verified identities and reviews helping build trust.

Reservation control is another advantage. Because Airbnb handles reservations, payments and customer support, the planned agent is intended to change reservations, resolve payment issues, assist with refunds and rebooking, and provide access to 24-hour safety support. Airbnb argues that an outside agent cannot easily perform those integrated actions on its own.

Existing AI Features and Support Results

Several guest-facing pieces are already available: natural-language or voice search across homes, experiences and services; AI-suggested filters; AI-generated listing summaries; and side-by-side wishlist comparisons with AI summaries. They show Airbnb applying AI to individual parts of discovery, while the planned agent extends that work into a generated interface and post-booking actions.

Airbnb’s separate customer-support assistant is available in more than 50 languages and is expanding to voice support in the United States. The company reports that approximately 40% of all Q3 2026 customer-support issues were resolved without a human agent, up from one-third in Q2 2026. That figure covers every support issue, including those that did not start with the assistant.

Airbnb attributes a year-over-year decline of more than 17% in Q3 customer-support cost per booking largely to assistant improvements. The result gives the agent plan an operational backdrop: automation is already resolving service requests and reducing support expense, while the new product would bring AI into the booking and trip-management workflow.

Airbnb also reports shipping more than 50 products and features in Q3, nearly 70% more than a year earlier, with AI helping teams move faster. Quarterly revenue was $4.9 billion, up 19% year over year. Nights and Seats Booked, which combines nights booked for stays with seats booked for services and experiences after cancellations and alterations, reached 155.0 million, up 16%.

The plan joins two distinct uses of AI: cutting support handling costs and shaping the guest’s travel workflow. Its central product tension is that Airbnb wants the agent to act throughout a trip while preserving the browsing, comparison and group decision-making that its own guest figures describe as integral to booking.
