    The Briefing:
iOS 27 shipped as a free update on September 14, 2026, with Siri AI launching in beta — opt-in only, and possibly gated behind a waitlist. The rollout is the first major product moment for Apple CEO John Ternus, who succeeded Tim Cook on September 1, 2026. Siri AI requires an iPhone 15 Pro, iPhone 15 Pro Max, or iPhone 16 or later; older iPhones, including the iPhone 11, get iOS 27 without it.

Spanish-language support is coming in October 2026; Siri AI is English-only at launch and unavailable in the EU or China. Apple will cap daily use of cloud-powered Siri AI features, with expanded limits planned as a paid option. Apple released iOS 27 on Monday, September 14, 2026, bringing its redesigned Siri AI assistant to iPhones just days before the new iPhone 18 lineup reaches store shelves

But downloading the update doesn’t guarantee instant access: Siri AI is launching in beta, and Apple says users must opt in through the Settings app — and may need to join a waitlist before the assistant actually activates. For Spanish-speaking readers in particular, one detail stands out: Siri AI works in English only for now, with support for Spanish, French, Japanese, Korean and Portuguese confirmed to arrive next month.A New CEO’s First Big Product MomentSiri AI’s launch carries extra weight because it’s the first major software rollout under Apple’s new leadership.

John Ternus took over as CEO on September

John Ternus took over as CEO on September 1, 2026, and unveiled the feature’s consumer debut at the company’s iPhone launch event days earlier. “It’s personal intelligence that’s actually personal,” Ternus said, according to CNBC, describing an iPhone that “sits at the center of an amazing ecosystem of intelligent features and experiences that work seamlessly across the products you use every day.” That same event, held September 9 at Apple Park, is also where Apple introduced the iPhone Duo, its first foldable iPhone — the device Ternus was photographed holding as he made the announcement.Unlike a typical feature flip, Siri AI isn’t switching on automatically for eligible users.

Apple has framed it explicitly as a beta: people have to turn it on themselves in Settings, and CNBC reports they “may have to add their names to the waitlist before getting access.” That framing is a meaningful shift from earlier previews of the feature, which emphasized what Siri AI could do without dwelling on how gated the actual rollout would be.Not Every iPhone Qualifies — And Not Every Feature Is Free ForeverDevice eligibility remains tiered.

According to MacRumors’ breakdown, “everything else, from the iPhone 15 and iPhone 15 Plus down to the iPhone 11, gets iOS 27 without Apple Intelligence or the new Siri” — a finding independently corroborated by Macworld. Apple’s own minimum, per its September announcement, is an iPhone 15 Pro, 15 Pro Max, or iPhone 16 or later; the fullest voice-customization tier is reserved for the iPhone 17 Pro, 17 Pro Max, and iPhone Air.Even for eligible users, access isn’t unlimited.

Apple confirmed that Siri AI and Apple Intelligence

Apple confirmed that Siri AI and Apple Intelligence features relying on its cloud servers will carry daily usage caps, with room to grow later — “expanded limits will ‘be available for a fee in the future,'” per CNBC. Apple’s own language on the restriction: “Daily limits may vary by feature, request complexity, system demand, system policies, and other factors.”What Siri AI Actually DoesFunctionally, the new Siri uses large language models to search a user’s own data — messages, emails, and calendar entries — to do things like surface an address buried in a text thread or pull up a recipe someone sent months ago, per CNBC’s description.

It also answers general knowledge questions and performs live web lookups, consistent with Apple’s own description of “personal context” awareness, on-screen understanding, and expanded systemwide app actions. A new standalone Siri app saves past queries, and — a first for Apple’s assistant — users can now reply to Siri’s own responses, making exchanges feel more like an ongoing conversation than one-off commands. How much of this runs on Google’s technology has been one of the more contested threads in the coverage.

CNBC’s reporting adds specificity: for complex queries, Apple routes requests through its Private Cloud Compute system, which runs on Google Cloud infrastructure paired with Nvidia and Intel chips — and separately, “Apple is also using Google’s Gemini to build its own models.” That’s a narrower claim than the “Siri now runs on Gemini” framing some outlets have used; it lines up more closely with AppleInsider’s account that Apple’s own Foundation Models, not Gemini directly, power Siri’s responses, with Gemini’s role confined to training.A Feature Years in the MakingApple first showed this version of Siri AI at WWDC26 in June, calling it “an entirely new version of Siri that is profoundly more intelligent, knowledgeable, and capable.” But the project has a longer, rockier history: an earlier AI-powered Siri that Apple announced in 2024 was delayed into 2026, part of a pattern of slippage that pushed the rebuilt assistant’s arrival well past its original timeline. For now, iPhone 11 owners and other holdouts can install iOS 27 today, per TechCrunch’s confirmation that the update reaches “all users with iPhone 11 or later.” Whether they’ll ever see Siri AI on that hardware, and whether Spanish-speaking users get the promised October rollout on schedule, are the two questions worth watching next.
