The Ministry of Justice Investigation Bureau has conducted a cybersecurity training program for officials from Guatemala, reports said Friday

Taiwan was already helping its diplomatic ally with the delivery of 500 police scooters and electronic hardware, but for the first time it has expanded its assistance to include a training program, per Liberty Times. The program was designed to meet the demands of Guatemalan law enforcement.

The training emphasized the establishment of ties between officials from both countries to boost the fight against cross-border crime. Guatemala sent 15 officials to take the courses, covering theory as well as practical training, Liberty Times reported. Investigation Bureau Director General Michael Chen (陳白立) said the collection and forensic analysis of digital evidence had become an essential element of law enforcement.

The completion of the course by the Guatemalan delegation was not an end in itself, but the first phase of a longer process of cooperation, he said.

The Central American country’s foreign ministry thanked Taiwan on its Facebook page for its assistance with the course. Interior Minister Marco Antonio Villeda Sandoval attended the graduation ceremony during his recent visit to Taiwan.
