G20 Innovation Ministerial puts Chapel Hill in global spotlight

World leaders, technology executives and policymakers will discuss artificial intelligence and emerging tech in the Triangle this week.
CHAPEL HILL, N.C. (WTVD) –The Triangle is set to take center stage on the international scene this week as Chapel Hill hosts the G20 Innovation Ministerial, bringing together world leaders, technology executives and policymakers to discuss artificial intelligence and emerging technologies.
The two-day event at the Carolina Inn will feature some of the most influential figures in technology, including Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang and OpenAI CEO Sam Altman, who are scheduled to speak Wednesday. Elon Musk is expected to deliver remarks virtually.
The gathering comes as governments, businesses and educational institutions grapple with how artificial intelligence will shape economies, jobs and public policy in the years ahead.
The G20 event is bringing business leaders to North Carolina and putting the Triangle in the spotlight.
Steve Rao, a former Morrisville Council Member who focused on technology policy and now works with the government affairs firm State Federal Strategies, said North Carolina is well-positioned to contribute to those discussions.
“North Carolina’s a great state to have those conversations because we have an innovation ecosystem,” Rao said. “We have investors, we have entrepreneurs, and we can have a lot of startups that create new jobs in the new economy.”
A recent Bentley University-Gallup poll found Americans remain divided on artificial intelligence. According to the survey, 52% of respondents said AI creates an equal amount of good and harm, while 39% said the negatives outweigh the positives. Just 9% viewed the technology as a net positive.
Rao said states must actively participate in shaping AI’s future.
“You can either lead on it or you can shy away from it and just say I’m going to be a passive observer,” he said. “I think there’s no state in the country that has a better chance to lead on it than North Carolina, and I think we’ve got to get ahead of it.”
The G20 includes many of the world’s largest economies, representing roughly 85% of global gross domestic product and about two-thirds of the world’s population.
For Chapel Hill and the broader Triangle, the event represents more than a policy discussion. Local business leaders see it as an opportunity to showcase the region to an international audience.
“There’s a lot of upside for us, the opportunity for folks who may not have visited our community to see it, the opportunity for the coverage that will happen all across the world where Chapel Hill is going to get mentioned,” said Aaron Nelson, president and CEO of the Chamber for a Greater Chapel Hill and Carrboro.
Nelson said the conference could further accelerate local interest in artificial intelligence among businesses.
“We’re convening groups on (AI integration). (We) just had a training last week on AI for small businesses,” he said. “Most businesses are leaning in, but after this conference, I expect that interest to grow.”

Nelson also highlighted partnerships among local governments, businesses and the University of North Carolina aimed at supporting entrepreneurship and innovation.
“The Junction is a great example of that,” Nelson said. “A partnership between our university, our county and our city where businesses can get started and feel supported.”
According to the North Carolina Department of Commerce, about 19% of businesses in the state report already using AI technology.
The conference comes as towns and cities are holding meetingsdiscussingthe future of AI and data centers.
“We can’t make this decision in silos. AI is not going to stop. We can have all the moratoriums we want in the world on data centers, but that’s not going to slow down the pace of AI innovation,” Rao said.
He adds conversations about AI integration include workforce effects.
“How do we have strategies and policies that create jobs? How are we going to train our community colleges? What are the kinds of shifts we have to make in our education?” said Rao.
Another topic drawing questions revolves around energy usage, particularly as Duke Energy requests a rate hike.
“How do we have infrastructures keeping innovation, how big these data centers need to be? Where is the energy coming from? How is it going to center utility bills? This is a huge issue that we’re hearing,” Rao said.
The conference follows another major G20 gathering in North Carolina, with the G20 Finance Track Meeting wrapping up in Asheville.

The G20 meeting is an opportunity for finance ministers and media from around the world to see that although WNC needs more federal support, the region is on the road to recovery. Later this week, the G20 Innovation Ministerial will come to the Research Triangle. NC’s been a top 2 state for business the past six years and continues to build a world-class workforce. Last year, we had our best year of job announcements in state history. We’ve got a lot going for us, and it’s time the world knows it!”
Town of Chapel Hill officials are advising residents and visitors to expect delays and consider alternate routes around the Carolina Inn and surrounding streets during the summit.
