Applications are now open for the 2026 Google for Startups Accelerator South Africa. We are backing 15 growth-stage, AI-driven startups with non-dilutive funding, Google’s AI tools, cloud infrastructure and models, helping them strengthen their products and enhance their technical capabilities.
It turns into action the announcement James Manyika, Senior Vice-President of Research, Labs, Technology and Society, set out at the Google Cloud Summit in Johannesburg, and forms part of our plan to support 50 South African startups between 2024 and 2028.
Here is what selected founders get:
- Financial fuel for growth: Up to R1 million per startup, and we take no equity in return. Founders keep full ownership of the business they have built and can put the money straight into growth. Scaling a company takes room to hire and ship, and this gives founders that room without handing over a slice of what they own.
- Access to an elite tech stack: Selected startups plug directly into Google’s AI tools, cloud infrastructure and models, including hands-on access to Gemini. For a team building an AI-driven product, that means sharper capabilities and faster iteration on the same infrastructure Google runs at scale.
- Local founders first: This program is built for South African talent. We are prioritising South African-led, historically disadvantaged person (HDP)-owned or controlled startups that are shipping functional, AI-driven products for local market realities. The founders closest to a problem tend to build the best answer to it, and that’s who we want in the room.
- Global mentorship, one to one: The three-month hybrid program will run from 28 September to 4 December. Each founder is paired one-to-one with mentors and AI specialists to work through real product, data and operational challenges. The curriculum covers product roadmapping, growth strategy and goal-setting, and founders join a network of 25+ local alumni plus the global Accelerator community.
Since its launch in 2018, the Google for Startups Accelerator Africa has supported over 190 startups across 17 African countries. Together they have raised more than $400 million (about R4.3 billion) and created over 3,500 jobs, backed by $5 million in equity-free funding and product credits from Google.
“We’re backing South Africans building for South Africa, because they read this market better than anyone,” Madikane says. “When these companies grow, they hire here, and they prove that AI built on the continent can compete anywhere.”
