Ami B. Bhatt, MD, a veteran cardiologist and digital health specialist, is the new chief medical officer of Whoop, a Boston-based wearable tech company.

As chief medical officer, Bhatt will be tasked with empowering users and shaping the company’s consumer health strategy. The long-term goal is to “establish Whoop as a trusted bridge between everyday health and clinical care.”

To accept this new role, Bhatt stepped down as the chief innovation officer of the American College of Cardiology, a position she held for more than four years. She was also previously the first chairperson of the FDA’s Digital Health Advisory Committee and the director of outpatient cardiology and telecardiology at Massachusetts General Hospital.

“I have spent my career focused on delivering high-quality care to people where they are,” Bhatt said in a statement. “Whoop has been building toward that same vision, and now we have the opportunity to build it together.”

“We’re entering a new era where every person can have a continuous 24/7 understanding of their health,” added Will Ahmed, founder and CEO of Whoop. “The companies that define this era will combine world-class technology with deep clinical credibility. Dr. Bhatt has helped shape the future of digital medicine, and her leadership will help accelerate the next chapter for Whoop.”

    What is Whoop?

Whoop’s wearable devices are designed to provide users with 24/7 predictive insights based on their own health data. Features include an electrocardiogram feature approved by the FDA, blood pressure insights and a blood biomarker analysis. Artificial intelligence evaluates these data and provides detailed evaluations on the company’s smartphone app. These devices have no screen and were designed with fashion in mind.

More than 2.5 million members currently pay an annual subscription fee to use Whoop.

In March, the company raised $575 million from Abbott, Mayo Clinic and a long list of celebrity investors that included LeBron James, Cristiano Ronaldo, Rory McIlroy and Reggie Miller.

In 2025, the FDA sent Whoop a warning letter about its marketing practices. The agency said Whoop failed to secure the proper regulatory approvals for its Blood Pressure Insights feature that tracks daily blood pressure estimates based on the user’s heart rate, sleep patterns and other factors. The FDA argued that Whoop’s devices needed to secure specific approvals because they are medical devices. Whoop pushed back, arguing that Blood Pressure Insights was a “wellness feature” and not a medical device.

The FDA dropped the issue in June.
